Scholarships and Grants

SCHOLARSHIPS AND GRANTS - AND YOUR FAMILY....

Scholarships and grants have been put in place to try and help individuals to make ends meet while at a university, regardless of the financial situation of the family involved.

Believe it or not, they both can involve the whole family. Obviously they would not pay for anything other than the college education of one member of the family, but in terms of helping and giving support.

Most parents feel that it is their responsibility alone to send their children to college. However, this is not always possible, especially if one's income has been cut or savings has been exhausted due to financial difficulties.

I have read stories of parents resenting their children because they happen to be funding themselves instead of being provided for by the parents. This is extremely rare, but it does happen.  I remember my oldest sister rejecting my parent's money when it came time for college.  She wanted the feeling of independents to earn her college degree on her own.  And so she did.  My parents were upset about it, but she was happy with her decision and that's what counts.  A persons well-being to do what they believe is best for them.  Parent should give their children whatever support they can and that their children need, even it it's only emotional support.

On the others hand, don't let pride get in the way of your taking help when it's needed through available scholarships and grants that you might be qualified to receive.  While you may not want to owe anyone anything, remember, we're talking about your family.  If they are caring people, let them help you whenever necessary when it comes to finding and applying for a college scholarship or just helping you in general.

Parents might be able to help their children in ways that will provide needed college money that would otherwise be difficult, if not impossible to obtain, such as through the Pell Grant.  I did this for my daughter years ago and she was not happy about it, but I pushed for her to do it because she had a dream to become a teacher and we didn't have the money at the time to put her through college.  Eventually she was happy to have family behind her knowing that we were actually supporting her dream that would make her happy and fulfilled for the rest of her life.

So let your family help and support you even if it's just to be cheerleaders.  By involving your family in your scholarship process, they are part of your big adventure and it can really be of benefit to you as well. There is absolutely nothing wrong with involving them in your plans, even though some may think otherwise. Although it is your experience they are lending a helping hand toward, not their own.

Your family may not be able to afford the best in college education for you, but if they are on the poverty line or below it you may be eligible for a Pell Grant as I have mentioned.  However, you will need your parents to help you provide the details needed in order to claim the grant.

If you plan to claim as a low-income household then you will be able to get a certain amount of help from the government to get you throughcollege. You will need to include salary before and after taxes, other expenses and dependents and a variety of other information on the application form. The only way you will get all of the necessary information is if your parents are willing to help you. It takes time to organize this information and fill out the forms, so they should begin as soon as possible.

In effect, their struggle to make ends meet can actually improve your chances of finding funding through scholarships and grants! Although this is of no comfort to them, they do not have to struggle to put you through college, and that shouldgive them peace of mind.
